I would recommend getting a copy of [Laravel CodeBright by Dayle Rees] (https://leanpub.com/codebright). He does a good job of introducing the framework in an easy to follow manner. I am also completely new to laravel but after going through the book I can at least have an idea what is going on when looking at code written by more advanced developers.
