We use github registration to stop most of the spam, though obviously it doesn't stop everyone. We have moderators and when noticed the spammer is banned and all threads deleted.

Majority of spam you don't actually see because moderators delete it.

Its not crazy amounts, but it is more than I would like. I am thinking of a simple mechanism to cut down on part of it.

I know and I feel your pain. I've already put in quite some anti-spam solutions though as you can see it's not perfect. I try to visit the forums daily to clean up any spam that got through but our moderators are already doing a great job (thank you so much for this).

When the next version of the portal is done the moderators will have even more tools to fight spam accounts.
