For projects like this I would prefer to build it from scratch, since the basic logic (to me) seems simple for these applications to work.

Otherwise I would suggest you to take a look at www.laracasts.com specifically the 'Lets Build Larabook from scratch', there should be a ton of relevant stuff for your projects in this series alone :).

if you're making a dating site make your site stand out from others. There may be packages or cms that can be used to set up a dating site in minutes but developing a logic unique to your site: that's some thing you need to come up with. You can start with profiles first. because it's the main building block. good luck.
