Solution

Hi, "By the SQL book" imho:

  • Users table - where you store common fields
  • Teachers table - for teacher related fields. foreign key to users.
  • Students table - for student related fields. foreign key to users.

If you add more profiles you can find yourself in a situation when one users can have more then one profile (eg. course administrator profile).

This model can handle it.
