We did the same this. Switched everything to utf8mb4_unicode_ci
. I don't see a good reason to use anything else now that utf8mb4
is here, especially with the widespread adoption of the new emoticons in iOS and Android that require utf8mb4
.
The only remaining consideration is how to display those emoticons on desktops, since most desktop fonts don't have glyphs for them.
