I use a custom queue based around mysql which runs in a seperate process as we have a pretty bespoke setup and we started development quite a long time ago so this is somewhat legacy - beanstalk would be pretty high up on my list if I was doing things again
For big projects i'm using gearman but for small projects default queue combined with a cron is enough for me.
