Why not just use something like Mandrill?
I've never used Mandrill before. I'm actually still pretty new to Laravel.
I run a site where it uses the localhost SMTP server, and have just set the username and password in mail.php to null. Works great here.

Mandrill is easy to use, signup, grab your creditionals and dump in mail.php with smtp as the driver.
