Nettuts has some good Laravel tutorials (e.g. http://code.tutsplus.com/tutorials/building-web-applications-from-scratch-with-laravel--net-25517).
I'd recommend coming up with something small you want to do and just dig in. That's what usually works best for me. Good luck!

+1 to Dayle Rees' book. Before I read that book I had tried and given up on other MVC frameworks because it never clicked. He's got a great way of explaining everything.
