Solution
I don't feel that the permissions in the vendor directory should be modified in order for the application to work properly. This change was made recentlly (v5.0.16 I believe) and not a lot of people are too happy with it.

Personally, I feel that a change this big should be scheduled for a bigger release (i.e. v5.1) as opposed to integrating into the latest code base.
