I recommend following the instructions of the official documentation. And as I see, there is no direct upgrade guide available.

https://laravel.com/docs/5.3/upgrade

First upgrade your project to 5.2, then to 5.3 and eventually to 5.4. But others are welcome to prove me wrong.
