There is no app/storage folder in laravel 5, app folder is on the same level with the storage folder now. It looks like the instructions were for the 4th version of the framework. If you create the project with composer:
composer create-project laravel/laravel folder-name-with-laravel --prefer-dist
then the storage folder will be folder-name-with-laravel/storage
