It seems like it's just some sort of incompatibility between the Blade 4.2 compiler and HHVM. If I run 4.2 on PHP 5.5 everything works fine. I'm just going to wait out the update until either HHVM or Laravel fixes the issue between the two, which I hope is soon since Forge supports HHVM, and it wouldn't be fun for people inexperienced with servers to setup a 4.2 install with HHVM and have it fail to work properly.
