There were some issues with the DB session driver, are you using that, or the native session?

Just the native file sessions.

I just tried some migrations and seeds which run successfully, so nothing wrong with the connection.

Could only fix by installing a fresh version of 4.2 and copying my project over :( Probably took less time than trying to debug what was going on. Thanks for the help!
