I've used both and for our application, Sentry/Sentinel worked fine. The way they handle permissions isn't really suited for large applications though; handled via JSON strings. In all honesty, we used Sentinel and found it to be overkill for our needs, but used it because we had purchased the complete package from Cartalyst. I will say Cartalyst is very good on the support end, so if you have questions and need help, and can't find info on line... They are pretty quick to respond.
