You can use the File facade to get the contents of the file
$contents = File::get($filename);
Where $filename is the path to the file. Make sure that the file is readable.
Also, I'm sure this is just a project, but XML is a little old school. You may want to take a look at JSON - similar to xml and Laravel handles it really well.
