You can use the `sign to start a codeblok or use the codeblock button on the editor toolbar.
About your question:
I don't have any experience with useing Eloquent without Laravel so it is some guessing.
1 Did you enable all the error reporting?
2 Did you try a plain SQL statement (Like: Capsule::select('select * from persons');
