Is this code non-blocking (aka fire and forget)? Specifically wondering, if the MongoDB is busy or the connection to the MongoDB is slow, does the php application wait on it or keep going?

This is a great write up. Has any consideration been given to Laravel 5? I've been able to adapt this in its entirety with the exception of the request_id/uniquid() portion of the log.

How do I reference Session in bootstrap/app.php in Laravel 5.1? I'm stumped on this one.

You should use graylog (2). Its made for storing, accessing and searching logs. Apart from that it doesnt add another dependency (mongodb) to your live app.
