We did the same this. Switched everything to utf8mb4_unicode_ci. I don't see a good reason to use anything else now that utf8mb4 is here, especially with the widespread adoption of the new emoticons in iOS and Android that require utf8mb4.

The only remaining consideration is how to display those emoticons on desktops, since most desktop fonts don't have glyphs for them.
