You can include regular functions. Laravel does it for their helpers. See http://laravel.com/api/source-function-app_path.html. You'll have to manually require your file or add it to your composer.json

Although I wouldn't. Laravel is a great framework that helps to promote clean OO code with decoupled layers. If your transitioning to the new framework why not start a fresh. Try reading through Laravel blog posts. Check out Laracasts. Read some books on Laravel. Its always hard changing to a new way of thinking but once you have that new way ingrained in your head I guarantee you won't want to do it the old way.
