you should use middleware.. i am not sure what knd of flexibility you would want by giving users two choices:

  1. either view/update/delete a note (that belongs to them)
  2. give an error if it doesnt..

maybe for other things middleware isnt the way to go.. but right now it seems a good bet to use it.
