Solution

Fixed the password reset error! The problem was my .env and mail.php files. For some reason there was some messed up configuration in them that conflicted with each other. Changed mailgun to gmail and changed ports from 587 to 465 as well as made the encryption ssl. Had to make the changes in the .env as well.
